Ebook FAQs

  1. What is an eBook? An eBook is a digitized copy of a book that may be viewed on an electronic device.
  2. Does the library have eBooks? Yes, over 200,000 different eBooks are accessible through the Marshall University Library. 
  3. What device do I need to read an eBook? eBooks can be viewed on iPads, smartphones, computers, or tablets. You just have to have the appropriate software.
  4. What software will I need? This depends on the book and the publisher, but some common formats include: PDF, ePub, Kindle Format 8, and Mobi.
  5. Can I print out an eBook? Some eBooks allow readers to print; however, others have restrictions. It depends on the book.
  6. Can I download an eBook to my device? This also depends on the book. Some books have restrictions, so you may only read it in your browser. Other books are able to be downloaded and read via PDF or a similar format.
  7. Do I need an account to read an eBook? This depends. Proquest and EBSCO require an account to download a book to your device, but you may make a free account with your MyMU credentials. To read it in your browser, you will only need to be logged in with MyMU.
  8. How do I sign up for a Proquest Account? On the Sign-In page, look for the button to Create Account or Request an Account.
  9. Are there any textbooks available as eBooks? Yes, there are some eBook versions of textbooks available through the library. This depends on the publisher.
  10. How long can I keep a downloaded copy of an ebook? Some books have 7 day limits, some have 365 day limits, some do not have a limit at all. You must check on the information page of the book.
